Upper Hanawi Falls is seen from the roadside along Hana Rd., at the bridge over Hanawi Stream. It is a smallish looking 30 ft. high waterfall, and may not be too impressive at all. However, if it has been raining a lot, and the creek is overflowing, then this is a very unique and marvelous waterfall, as the entire width of the stream above the bridge is filled with water. Usually, however (such as when we were here), it is just a small, normal waterfall.
Although this is often called "Hanawi Falls", it is really "Upper Hanawi Falls". The real Hanawi Falls is downstream from here, and is a much bigger waterfall (200 ft. high). This Hanawi Falls can be accessed via trail and bushwhacking from the town of Nahiku. However, the trail is on land leased by East Maui Irrigation company, and they sadly do not grant permits to hike to Hanawi Falls to the general public.
