7 Horsetail Falls
Horsetail Falls, aka Rush Creek Falls, is a huge 270 ft. waterfall dropping down from Agnew Lake in the June Lake Loop area. In the spring and early summer, the waterfall is amazing with the snow melting. But later in the year, it is still a very impressive cascade, depending on if any water is being released from the upstream dam at Agnew Lake.
The flow of Horsetail Falls is somewhat of a mystery. When I was here in the spring, it was just trickling because there was little water being released from the dam. I was expecting it to be flowing very well with the spring snow melt, but it was not. When I was here in October one year, it was flowing very well, and I wouldn't have thought it would be at that time of year. So really, you are just going to have to count on Lady Luck if you come here, whether it will be flowing for you or not.
The waterfall is easily visible from the roadside on the June Lake Loop. It looks like a plunge type waterfall from head-on, but if you look at it from the side, it can be seen that it is more of a cascade type waterfall.
It may be possible to hike up closer to the waterfall from the power station (off June Lake Rd.), but I have not done this yet.
There is another waterfall right beside this one, called Tatum Falls, which would be pretty interesting earlier in the spring or summer, but dries up by late summer.
